News and History of the PNG Development Group from 2017
Herein lie news items and historical stuff primarily of interest to the
Portable Network Graphics Development Group itself. Feel free to poke
around even if you're not a member, though. Note that some of the links,
particularly the older ones, are broken; in some cases this is explained by
later entries. Other links (CompuServe, tcg.arl.mil) have fallen prey to
reorganizations or upgrades; should they ever reappear, the entries below
will be updated as needed.
Keep in mind that this is history here...
- current - see here
- 29 September 2017 - libpng 1.6.34
is released with fixes for some oss-fuzz issues and an off-by-one error
in png_do_check_palette_indexes(), as well as the usual minor
cleanups.
- 28 September 2017 - libpng 1.6.33
is released and almost immediately pulled due to some last-minute pngsuite
additions that broke "make test".
- 24 August 2017 - libpng 1.6.32 is
released with fixes for a possible NULL dereference
in png_handle_eXIf() (new in 1.6.31) and a memory leak in the same
when returning with an error, along with various other fixes to the
function. It includes a few other OSS-fuzz fixes, as well as numerous
small fixes and improvements.
- 27 July 2017 - libpng 1.6.31 is
released with support for the recently approved eXIf chunk as well as a
number of minor build fixes.
- 13 July 2017 - The eXIf chunk is approved at along last.
PNG finally includes a formal mechanism for inclusion of photographic
metadata in EXIF format.
- 28 June 2017 - libpng 1.6.30 is
released with a fix for empty IDAT chunks, documentation updates, checks
for integer overflows in contributed utilities visupng and genpng, and
other minor fixes.
- 16 March 2017 - libpng 1.6.29 is

the main distribution.
- 15 January 2017 - zlib 1.2.11

are reports that while the 32-bit x86 assembler code works fine, the 64-bit
version does not work on Windows (size of long differs from Linux), and
it's unclear whether it works entirely correctly even on Linux. Only the C
code is officially supported.
- 5 January 2017 - libpng 1.6.28 is
released with a workaround for a bug exposed by building with the new
versions of zlib.
- 2 January 2017 - zlib 1.2.10
is released with fixes for two serious bugs in 1.2.9. (Oops.)
- 1 January 2017 - zlib 1.2.9
is released.
